Question about English (US)
Could you please explain the meaning of "the service of their country" in this sentence?
"The summer soldier and the sunshine patriot will, in this crisis, shrink from the service of their country."
To my knowledge, it means the act of serving in the army when you reach 18, which is obligatory. If you shrink from the service of your country, you avoid the responsibility of joining the army when you turn 18.
Thank you so much.

In the United States, military service is entirely voluntary. We have not drafted individuals to serve in the military since the 1970s.
So you understand the words of phrase, and now you have the context to understand the meaning.

To serve your country is to work in the military. The only time joining the military is obligatory is if the United States doesn’t have enough soldiers, which would be a draft requiring anyone over 18 to join the military. People would dodge the draft by claiming to fit under the circumstances that would make them unfit to join the army. However, people are only drafted during large scale wars and the last draft in the United States was during the Vietnam War in 1973. My assumption is the sentence means that in this war or crisis, the soldiers are avoiding joining the army. I think you are pretty much correct.
