Nearby has a similar meaning to close and can be used like this
Example 1:
A woman nearby was staring at her
Example 2:
I heard a loud noise so I hid behind a car nearby

@OnClouds they have the same meaning it’s just more common to see it as “nearby” instead of “near by”. I think in the UK they commonly write it as “near by” but in Canada and the US it’s commonly written as “nearby
