Your original sentence is fine.
Use of “ash” is also acceptable.
This is similar to
“Snow falling from above” vs “snowflakes falling from above”
Using “ash” or “snow” in this way gives a more robust image. I would think of the snow or ash as one whole concept.
Using “ashes” or “snowflakes” gives a more dispersed idea, it would make me think more on the many many tiny particles of snow or ash.
