Question about English (US)

I was watching an American movie on Netflix and found someone saying the Japanese word "haiku" at school. (Tke subtitle also said haiku)
The line was like "Well, here's a haiku Katie wrote in my English class. 'A caged bird am I. My mother, my sweet captor. Mother, let me fly' ".
The mother said she(her daughter) nailed it but how do you count the haiku "five-seven-five?"
What are the rules for haiku in the U.S.?
