@macco8 The first sentence is correct, it means the same thing with saying either boys or sons.

The first one is correct but you would probably also say “one is 7 years old and one is 4 years old.”
You can also use the second formation, but you treat it like a noun. For example “I have a seven year old” or “he is a seven year old.”
Boys can be used and it will have the exact same meaning here.
