hard has multiple meaning 固いとか難しい。文脈によると違う。

But they come from different languages
Hard is a true English word, it comes from the Germanic language
Difficult comes from the French / Latin language
French was the official language of England for 300 years. So there are many French words in the English language

Because many words have the same meaning
That can be confusing
Before France was a country, it was the Roman Empire (they spoke Latin)
The North Europeans invaded, and created France
But they started speaking Latin (creating the French language)
Then more North Europeans (the Vikings) invaded France
They created Normandy (ノルマンディー) and started speaking French
These French speaking Vikings invaded England
This was William the Conqueror (ウィリアム1世)
And he created modern English, a mixed language
The British Royal Family comes from William the Conqueror
