You’ve got it right! Brackets are just []. () are parentheses and {} are braces. We use parentheses pretty often to enclose additional related information to a sentence (like I’m doing here), and brackets are often used in formal writing such as to indicate adding your own words to a quotation to clarify. For example, if the original quote you were citing was “The President refused to sign the bill they had put forward”, you might clarify in your paper: “The President refused to sign the bill they [the House] had put forward.” Brackets can also serve as parentheses within a parentheses if needed: (two cups of sugar [brown], milk, and chocolate [semisweet]).
I don’t think I’ve ever used braces outside of mathematics, though. I believe they’re used in music as well, but they’re pretty uncommon.
