In the wake of his death, the village was sad.
After his death, the village was sad.
"In the wake of" sounds more formal and is much less common than "after." I would recommend to just use "after" the large majority of the time.
Technically, "in the wake of" kind of means "recently after" more than just "after."

âIn the wake ofâ suggests that other events happened as a result of a main event.
Ex: In the wake of 9/11, airport security changed dramatically.
âAfterâ also works, but âin the wake ofâ suggests a relation, and not just a timeline.
