"Longing" is closer in meaning to「切望」。
It's like, "I am unhappy because I'm not playing soccer. I want to play it very badly, and it makes me sad or pained to think that it's something I can't do right now."
It is NOT like, "Soccer players seem like amazing people, and I want to be one of them", nor is it like, "Being a professional soccer player would be a really cool career, and I'm excited when I think I could have that career."
