Both answers are correct but there is a slight difference between them. Both imply that the person did not pawn but the first one puts more emphasis on the intent/wishes of the person. That is to say, in both you expected the person to have pawned it, but in the first one you also expected the person to have *wanted* or *intended* to pawn it as well, while in the second one it's more of an observation/statement that you expect the person to have pawned it. The difference is pretty subtle but it's definitely there!
