When you're provoked, you don't always act directly against the person who provoked you. But you are saying they caused your actions. You can be provoked by someone into fighting someone else, for example.

Poking an animal with a pointy stick is provoking it. Calling someone bad names might provoke a fight. Provoke is like cause but more loose. If I cause you to do something, then it is mostly my fault. If I provoke you, then I almost caused you to do something.
