Yep! That sounds natural.
"I heard about the party through word of mouth."
Sometimes I say 'by' but it's the same thing:
"I get most of my info by word of mouth."

My understanding is that 'word of mouth' is similar to 'rumor'.

Through word of mouth の部分がただ文章の一部と思われているので、意味的に「口コミでつかいたい」になってしまいます。
こうやってはっきりと分けましょう:
I want to use the phrase "through word of mouth."
まず ”” クォーテーションマークで使いたいフレーズをくくりましょう。
それから「これが使いたい表現だよ」と分かってもらうため、the phrase ... と言えます。
これは ... という表現 という意味です。
