@newenglandgenie After reading your response, I realized that I assumed that the receptionist was speaking to John, not that the doctor’s last name was John! If that is what Rizz12345 meant, then your answer would, of course, be correct. I would note that “Dr.” in the U.S. followed by a period, as opposed to British English, which I understand writes it as “Dr” (without the period).

Yes, in the US we do put the period after Dr., Mr., Mrs., etc., and you’re right, in the UK they do not. If Rizz12345 had put a period after “doc,” I would have realized that John was being addressed. So I would now say “John, are you one of the doctor’s new patients?” OR simply “John, are you a new patient?” since I assume we are in the doctor’s office.
