It is grammatically correct to use “whom” this way. You’re right, native speakers will probably say “who” in place of whom. You can still say whom and it won’t sound super weird, but it is true that when speaking we usually disregard this rule. I don’t have a good answer as to why, I suppose it’s because “who” is slightly shorter and we know what you mean regardless of which word you use. Hope that clears it up!!

People say 'who' instead of 'whom' quite a bit. Nobody says anything, but people who speak correctly note that others are not speaking correctly. Does it matter? As a foreigner learning English, nobody will think less of you if you make the who/whom mistake.

As for writing, people notice the error easily and people will assume a lack of education on your part.

My opinion is that you should learn to speak correct English.

I follow the rules of who/whom when speaking regardless of how the other person speaks. There are many native speakers who make terrible grammar errors constantly. Things like 'Me and him went to the store' or 'just between you and I'. Just because someone else is doing it wrong does not inspire me to mimic the errors.

If you speak English well, the WORST thing they can think about you is, 'he speaks English well'.

It is grammatically incorrect to use "who" in many places - but we all do it.

Who gave you that? Correct

Who did you give that to? Incorrect, but everyone says it.

The rule I learned was, change the sentence to use "he or him".

If you would use "he" (HE gave it to me) then you should be using "who".

If you would use "him" ( I gave it to HIM) then use "whom"

But in everyday speech, "who" is fine.

The earlier poster is correct, it does betray a lack of proper education / knowledge of the language when native speakers fail to use it correctly (and I confess to doing it, a LOT)
