I have read this several times, and I don't think there's any way to know. The verb "obtain" is very vague, it really just means he didn't have it previously, but now he does. As you say, it may have been a gift or he may have purchased it.

In this text, "all the miles" is just an expression, it is not meant to be taken literally. It means all the things that they have done in the service of teaching.
"Logging miles" can be taken literally sometimes, for example a truck driver will "log miles" when he is driving, which is just a way of saying he records the number of miles he has driven.
