@morph4me thank you, so "the crew" is always a plural concept??
- English (US)
The crew is a singular collective concept, it is all of the people that work on the ship. The crew is singular but it means a group of people. There is one crew, but more than one member of the crew. I hope that helps.
- Italian
@morph4me yes, thank you. But the verb is always plural because the idea is that it's a group of people, isn't it?
- English (US)
In this case crew is a noun, but it's still singular it's like the word crowd, there is one crowd, but there are many people in the crowd, there is one crew, but there is more than one member of the crew
- English (US)
A collective noun, is singular in form, is used with a singular or plural verb depends on whether the word is referring to the group as a unit or to its members as individuals
- Italian
@morph4me yes I understood this, I wanted to know if it's used always with the plural verb. For example:
the crowd are very violent
The crowd are old people
Are these sentences correct?
the crowd are very violent
The crowd are old people
Are these sentences correct?
- English (US)
The crowd is very violent
The people in the crowd are very violent
The crowd is made up of old people
There are a lot of old people in the crowd
