To belittle someone is to speak about in a way that makes them seem unimportant or stupid or not worth your time. To look down upon someone is to feel or act like you're better than they are

@morph4me So the difference is that “ belittle “ means you intentionally want people to know they are unimportant. Whereas “ to look down upon” means you feel that way, but you don’t necessarily want let people know you feel that way, right?

That's almost right, but I don't think that the people who look down on others really worry about the people knowing it, but they aren't actively making people feel bad.
