@bsloan7 Thank you! But the first sentence started with “will”. Why was the second sentence “if you do”? “Will” doesn’t work here?

@bsloan7 So if I ask someone “Will you marry me”, it’s more natural to answer “Yes, I do” instead of “Yes, I will”?

@handsomeish No, it’s more natural to just say “yes”. I don’t think many people say “yes, I will”, but that would also be a correct response to “will you marry me”. “Yes, I do” would be incorrect.
Think of the sentence I wrote as:
I promise you’ll be the apple of my eye if you do (marry me).

@handsomeish Yeah, pretty much. In most weddings even, the response is “I do” for “I do take your hand in marriage.” It’s a bit nuanced but yeah

@handsomeish Well…the problem at hand is that the typical “traditional” way of proposing is by asking for their “hand in marriage.” I see where you’re coming though

Actually looking at it more closely in this scenario, “Will you marry me? I promise I’ll take you as the apple of my eye if you will,” would should probably replace will in the second half, since it’s a conditional statement. “*If* you would.” It’s very formal, so coming across this phrase to this degree of formality would be pretty rare. More likely than not, the “correct” answer would depend on who you asked and where they’re from

@handsomeish “I’m willing to” would be a weird response to “will you marry me”. It kind of conveys the opposite and makes it seem like you’re reluctant to marry the person lol.
“I’d love to” is better, but we’d probably extend the sentence and say “I’d love to marry you”. “Yes” is still the most common answer to this question by far though.
And no, no one says “I do” in response to “will you marry me”. The only time people say “I do” in regards to marriage/weddings is on their wedding day when the officiant asks “do you take this person to be your lawfully wedded wife/husband”.

@bsloan7 OK. Thank you! But “I’m willing to” sounds like I’m reluctant? “I’m willing to” doesn’t mean pretty much the same thing as “I’d like to” or “I’d love to”?

@handsomeish No, it doesn’t. “I’d love to” is much stronger than “I’m willing to”. It shows that you’re enthusiastic about it.
“I’d like to” is, of course, milder than “I’d love to”, but still stronger than “I’m willing to”.
“I’m willing to” just means that you will do it, but doesn’t show any sort of enthusiasm about doing it.

@handsomeish That’s kind of a difficult question to answer because I think in some instances, they mean the same thing. However sometimes, you can be willing to do something but not necessarily be interested in it. And you can also be interested in something, but not necessarily be willing to do it.
For example, I’m interested in the idea of competing on the tv show Survivor. But if I were actually given the opportunity to do so, I would not be willing to do it.
On the other hand, I’m willing to move to another country if I need to, but I’m not particularly interested in it.
And lastly, I’m both interested in Chinese and willing to learn it.
Does that make sense?
