According to Google:
Conservation is generally associated with the protection of natural resources, while preservation is associated with the protection of buildings, objects, and landscapes.
For me.. I would use preserve as a synonym of protect.
‘New loss to preserve wildlife in the area’
‘ to preserve endangered species from extinction’

For me, you conserve what you already have -for yourself and it may still run out or disappear, just more slowly.
Whereas you preserve something for another person and it should not cease to exist.
So we need to conserve resources to ensure we don’t run out and if it’s inevitable, that we slow the process down. However we preserve things to ensure future generations will experience the same.
Also, you had a small typo- it’s endangered* species
