excited and thrilled more or less express the same feeling of happiness for something about to happen.
But I feel like excited is used more commonly but thrilled is a better way to express one's feelings.

they both mean the same, like synonyms but "thrilled" is emphasizing more than "excited"
I was excited because of the party
I was thrilled because of my wedding (as you can see, both are different situations and you'll be -more excited- at your wedding than a party *is just an example*

While they basically means the same thing.
Excited is a feeling of excitement, while "I'm thrilled" is usually used as an alternative to "I'm happy" or "I'm ecstatic".
Excitement is a feeling of adrenaline, so "I'm excited" can be linked to the rush of adrenaline that one usually feels when watching a movie for example. It is sort of like a びりびり type of feeling.
"I'm thrilled" is more of a joyful type of feeling, like when you're feeling happy or glad, for example.
Examples:
"I'm excited for the Doctor Strange movie!"
"I'm thrilled that you're here, my friend."
