They are almost the same. "Kind of" sounds more casual. I think the answer above is not the same meaning in this case.

Kind of means several different things. One meaning is similar to “a little”
Kind of = partially, a small amount
I’m kind of sad today.
She’s kind of pretty, isn’t she?
Those boys are kind of mean to people.
A little = a small amount
I’m a little sad today.
They’re a little mean to people.
She’s a little pretty = incorrect (I’m not sure why)

It is used in many ways. “Kind of” can be used casually as an unsure response to someone or as a feeling of wanting and not wanting to do or say something. You can also use it as: This fish is a different kind of species.” Or “This is a different kind of food.”
You can also use a little like: “This fish is a little different.” Or “this car is a little big”

@Kijinyan When people speak quickly it sounds like kinda with a long “i” as in “kind”.
