“Going to” Is informal and connotes intention. This should not be used in writing.
“Will” connotes certainty.
If you ask a child, “take out the trash.”
The child will say, “I will.” Or he might say, “I am going to.” The latter implies that it will not be immediate that the child takes out the trash. He plans to do so. Since he is a kid, he will forget. (As a joke, saying “will forget”, meaning I am certain that he will forget.)
