'이란 뜻과, '잘 매만진 머리모양(=COIFFURE)', 두개 정도의 해석이 가능해보입니다. 다만, 두건은 유럽에서 16세기까지는 활발하게 쓰였으나, 그후는 거의 쓰이지 않은 듯해요. 구글 검색해서 나온 이미지에 딸린 내용설명을 살펴보시면 그 두건들은 하나같이 17세기 이전(잘하면 17세기 초까지)의 두건들입니다. 참고로 이 소설의 배경은 19세기 말이거든요. 그렇기에 저는 두건이란 단정은 맞지 않아 보입니다. 그래서 윗분이 말씀하신 머리스타일이 문맥적으로 맞다고 가정하고, 그 머리스타일이 이 문맥에서 본인의 머리스타일이라고 보는지, 아니면 가발의 스타일이라고 보는지 그것이 궁금해서 질문한 거였어요. 그런데 지금 다시 보니 이미 위엣 분은 그 가발의 헤어스타일을 말한 것이었네요. 시기만 중세이면 저도 고민없이 두건 쪽이 맞다고 봤을텐데....지금은 제가 좀 더 고민을 해봐야할 것 같네요. :) 어쨌든 지나가다 관심가져주시고 충분히 의미있는 발자취 남겨주셔서 감사합니다.

@jimpjorps One more thing. Is there any possibility for the coif here to be the attached close-fitting cap in your opinion? (To be honest, since the coif has been historically used until 17th but this novel is based upon 19th century victorian era so I think the coif is more like a hairstyle as you said rather than the attached fitting cap.)
