Basically they're interchangeable but "benutzen" sounds more casual than "verwenden". "Verwenden" sounds and is a bit more formal and thus is mostly used in formal situations.
Examples would be:
Verwenden:
- At a cooking show on TV: "Und nun verwende ich das bereits vorbereitete Blech."
(= And now I am using the already prepared baking sheet.")
- Benutzen:
- "Ich benutze immer das Shampoo von Nivea."
(= I always use the shampoo from Nivea)
In conclusion: In order to sound more natural use "benutzen". That's also what most people will use most of the time. "Verwenden" only sounds natural and not forced or "foreign" when your in a formal situation (meeting, job interview etc).
Hope that helps:)
