Se puede usar las dos en varios casos iguales, aunque estaba se puede usar tanto en primera persona como en segunda persona y estuvo no se puede usar en primera persona.

Yo estaba triste
El estaba perdido
Ella estaba almorzando
Nosotros estábamos dormidos
Estuvo:
El estuvo en Miami.
El estuvo cantando en el baño.
Ella estuvo corriendo por la calle.
Estuvo es como para referirse que ESTUVO en algún lugar

Los dos son el pasado del verbo estar (realizar una acción o visitar un lugar) estaba es un pasado cercano algo q acabas de hacer o un lugar donde acabas de ir, estuve es un pasado lejano algo q hiciste hace rato o un lugar que visitó. Ejemplos estaba en este momento dormido y me despertó un ruido.
Estaba en la tienda y acabo de salir.
Dónde estabas ayer? Estuve durmiendo todo el día. Que hiciste por la tarde? Estuve en la tienda.
