They go through a wonderful method during their 10 years of school known as "write it again, and again, and again and again." ^_^
If you don't start learning japanese when you're 6, it's impossible to learn effectively with this method, for the foreigners we are.
Most of us foreigners learn kanji by trying to see the figures in some Kanji, or finding a logical link between the radical and different components of the kanji, or any other mnemonic ways of remembering them.
For exemple, for the kanji 猫, wich means cat, I can see the image of a cat in it : the radical on the left (犭) represents the tail, the ⺾ on top represents the ears, and the 田 represents the face. ^^
Or the kanji for "speak", 話, is composed of 言 (say), and 舌 (tongue) -> when you SPEAK you SAY things with your TONGUE.
