I agree with nobu_japan. タメ口 is a slang. It can't be understood by older people. I am about 40 years old, but I knew this word few years ago.
You are talking about not only 丁寧語 but also entire 敬語. So I think you should say:
今までずっと丁寧語で話していたんですが、やっぱり敬語を使わずに話すべきだったのでしょうか。
