But in the case of とげぬき地蔵, it means "removing a needle"
There is a legendary story:
In Edo era, a woman accidentally swallowed a needle.
and in order to rescue her, someone made her swallow a picture of a bodhisattva. Then she threw up the picture with the needle piecing into it.
In this way, she was rescued. This is why people started to call the bodhisattva "とげぬき地蔵(needle removing saint)
