In what case would you use ため then? I've heard it used in this situation:
Person one offers a gift: "あなたのため"
Person two accepts gift, "ありがとう" etc.

Think of ため as "for the purpose of" rather than "for" and you are heading in the right direction.
何のためにここにきましたか? what did you come here for (the purpose of what?)
健康のためにジムに行きました (I went to the gym to get fit (for the purpose of getting fit)
