Though I'm not sure these are correct, I'd say it is like this.
"He is a firefighter."
彼は消防士です。(polite form, matter-of-fact sentence)
彼は消防士だ。(declaring expression)
彼は消防士なんだ。[/なのだ。written language](emphasized expression)
"It is that he is a firefighter."
"He IS a firefighter."
かっこいいだろ?
"Sounds cool, right?"

@deadlee Yes. For example, saying an opinion (especially an opposite one against other people's guess) or including a special emotion.
e.g.
Aが正解だと思うよね。でも、Bが正解なんだ。 (against other people's guess)
今日は休みだ。 (saying a fact only)
今日は休みなんだ。 (including a special emotion)
