We're in an era of over-abundance. Just about every household in Japan is full of unused items, outmoded clothes, unread books, all sorts of tools and appliances, forgotten trinkets, and so forth. Many of them haven't been touched for years, some were bought on impulse and not really necessary in the first place. Once piled up though, it is not easy to part with them. does this sound natural?

The sentence starting with “Many” should be split into two sentences or a semicolon should be used instead of the comma. Otherwise, this is perfect. Very nice job! And the U.S. is exactly like Japan in this way—perhaps worse.
