they are pretty much the same thing, since they are synonyms, but modest could also be used as when someone shows non-revealing clothing they could be called 'modest' but you couldn't use humble in that situation.

In addition, "humble" is a low opinion of yourself. "Modest" is having a humble demeanor. So you could say "humble" means having a modest opinion of yourself. Which came first, the chicken or the egg?
