I know "long for" means to want something very much, but I was wondering if the "long" in the phase "long for" relates the adjective "long" or they are completely different words?

@Erikajp They are completely different words. The verb "long" only means desire or yearn. They also seem to have different origins around a thousand years ago, so it's just a coincidence.

In Japanese, there is a phrase "首を長くして待っている(I'm waiting while I make my neck longer)", which means "I'm longing to(I'm so looking forward to)...".
They look somewhat similar😂
So I ended up thinking that they had the same origin, silly me😅
