Aquél is further away (distance) than ése
something like:
- Este = beside you
- Ese = 1 metre away
- Aquel = 3 metres away

"Ese" It's for things that are near to you.
"Aquel" It's for things that are away from you.
For example:
¿Me prestas ESE lápiz?
-We use "ese" because the pencil is near to you.
