Question about English (US)

I remember when I was traveling Powell River, BC in May. On the way back home, I was trying to get a drink from a vending machine at the ferry terminal. It was a hot day and I had been waiting for my ferry for several hours. I didn't have any cash, so I tried to pay with my credit card, which did not work for some reason. A young guy behind me asked me what I want to have and paid with his cash. That his act was impressive to me. Does this sound natural?
