If Japanese ppl see the only this word ために, they think it's 'for' like you said;

But ために is not only for 'for', but also for 'to', like below;

can ために be kinda like the phrase " for the sake of"
Example
for the sake of knowing, can you tell me what it is
for the sake of the surprise can you do this
