Question about

**English (US)**#
In my native language, Portuguese, we have different names for the term mathematical operation and for each one of them: addition, subtraction, multiplication and division.

When you first learn them, as a kid, at school, we don't use those complex names.

Operação Matemática - Conta

Adição - Conta de mais

Subtração - Conta de menos

Multiplicação - Conta de vezes

Divisão - Conta de dividir

Do you Americans do something similar? If so, what do you call them? (The childish way) Mathematical operation, addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. If there is more of them (like square root etc), I would appreciate if you write them too.

When you first

learned subtraction in ELEMENTARY SCHOOL, the teacher didn't say: "5 subtracted by 3 equals 2". Probably what they might have said is: "5 TAKE AWAY 3 equals 2". See the difference?

For kids to understand, teachers use a less complex way of saying things. If you get what I mean, would you mind "translating" the following "technical math terms" into a "child way". Think, what would you say if you were an 8 year old? (remember, not verbs, but NOUNS)

-Mathematical operation

-Addition operation

-Subtraction operation

-Multiplication operation

-Division operation

I would really appreciate. You don't have to be "grammatical", just think about yourself, when you first learned these things at school. If you can't remember, it's okay.
