Question about English (UK)

Recently I read new shocked word for me, which means potatoes, and it's called "spuds". The source said that "spuds" is more like the UK's version of potato, but I really hadn't heard bout it. Then I asked my teacher, but she don't know this word as well. Do you know is it right to use this word? Do you hear it in everyday speech?
(if you read my question to the end, already thank you hah)
