I know that "聞きている" means "listening" but I heard about the phrase "耳を澄ましている" which means "to listen carefully" but can someone tell me what "澄ましている" literally means?

everything is reflected in your cloudless mind(ear/eye) as it is ,and you can focus on them ...I interpret "澄ます" in this phrase.

first of all, i guess you may have typed 聞きている instead of 聞いている.
耳を澄ます is "listen to something carefully as you said".
澄ます is clarify, make something clear, and 耳 is ear as you know.
So, 耳を澄ます is clear the ears clear. this Implies "listen carefully concentrate on l8stening".
