It's funny; I actually have to put together my mess kit for camping when I get home. ^-^
Mess kits, or to me anyway, are sets of reusable dishes that one can take with them without fear of them getting destroyed because they're usually metal, like stainless steel. Google Images has some good pictures of there here: http://www.google.com/search?q=mess+kit&sou...

I'm not very sure about this one,
Mess has the meaning of a common dining place for college students, army etc. sponsored by their own organisations.
So it may refer to that, but I think it most probably refers to the more commonly used disaster (a mess of epic proportions) kit.
