They're pretty much the same thing. Figure out usually implies you "figured" it out on your own, while "find out" implies someone or something told you.

Figure out stresses out using one's mind to reach a point of realization. This differs from find out, which emphasizes a more physical approach in coming to a solution.

But, for practical use, they are the same.

I would say that if you figured something out you did research or something in order to know something, and if you found something out it's more like if someone told you. Both work, though.
