Question about Egypt

In my country the majority of people are Shia and I don't have that much a chance to meet a Sunni and ask him some questions. so since in your country the majority of people are Sunni, I ask my question here:
I've been told that Sunnis believe that the holy prophet (صلى الله عليه و آله و سلّم) passed away without appointing anyone as his successor (caliph). but how does it make sense? did he neglect or forget such an important thing which has direct impact on the future of Islam and Muslims? wasn't he aware of the danger of leaving the nation without a leader? was he careless about future of his nation? didn't he have foresight as much as every ruler? (because every ruler in the world know that they die some day and if they don't appoint a suitable person as successor the future of the country or nation will be in danger.)
