la gente is a group of people indeterminate
las personas is the same but with a sense a bit more personalized
But, it is more or less the same. We use more frequently "la gente"

Gente se utiliza en general,mientras personas para un grupo.
Pero son sinónimos, y puedes utilizar cualquiera de las dos dependiendo del contexto

Además gente es INCONTABLE, NO puedes decir una gente , dos gentes
Mientras personas es CONTABLE , SI puedes decir una persona , dos personas....
