“Merry” is just an old way of saying “happy”. People only really use it at Christmas time. It’s pretty much just “happy Christmas.”
Merry Christmas is such a common phrase that ‘happy Christmas’ sounds unnatural, so if you want to give somebody holiday wishes, I suggest the former.
