The first one makes more sense and is more natural than the second one

The first is better. The second is not right. It’s not grammatically wrong but sounds weird.
It could sound better with “formerly” in a different place, but I’d only use it when talking about a different subject.
For example:
We used to work together.
We formerly worked together.
“I was formerly over 100 pounds.”
