Japanese doesn't have a sound that is the same as English L or English R - it is somewhere in between. There are pronunciation guides online but basically:
For L, put the tip of your tongue on the back of your front teeth.
For R, pull your tongue away from your teeth about 1cm.
It might help to imagine these as completely new sounds you are making, rather than a "correct" R.

When you say the English 'l' sound, the tip of your tongue touches the top of your mouth behind your upper teeth.
When you say the English 'r' sound, the sides of your tongue lightly touch your upper teeth on both sides.
