There's no such thing as 'having a Korean name' without being Korean, unless your parents have given you a Korean name and have registered you with such a name. What you can have is the same the artists do, having an artistic name. But for surnames, only if you marry a Korean man outside our culture and inherit his surname.

@msshnm why do Koreans always tell me “My English name is <insert name>”?? Koreans are allowed to pick English names and Americans are allowed to pick korean names. I can have a korean name. When I meet Koreans I say “nice to meet you, I’m 예린” because that’s the name I go by to Koreans. If I go to korea I will go by the name of 예린

@armybabie it's just like what I told you before, the same artists do, having an artistic name. it's not their real name. unless they were born outside Korea or have an overseas mom or dad so they ended up having a foreign name.

@armybabie if you come to Korea you can address yourself as 예린 if you like and people will call you that it you ask them to. but if 예린 is not your registered name, it's just not your name. there's no such thing as 'having a Korean name' without being Korean or having it registered because for some reason your dad or mom liked a Korean name and named you after it.

Marry a Korean man outside Korea so you can inherit his family's name, but it's not our custom.

@msshnm then I have to register 예린 as my name 🙄
