Both of the sentences are correct and natural
However, ① is more commonly used (between people casually).
*the word "operation" here is more general in meaning than the word "surgery"*
② would be used when trying to be more specific
Also, I think the word "the" is optional in the second sentence. If you use the word "the", it implies a specific surgery (or kind / type of surgery).
2) The patient lost a lot of blood during surgery.
