I received a Christmas present from my friend who lives in Yamaguchi Prefecture.
There was a letter that wrote about her recent situation.

1st sentence perfect. Then, "She wrote a letter about her recent situation." The letter did not write, she did, so that is more correct.
I would need to know exactly what she wrote to be able to say whether the last sentence is correct or not, but maybe "I was happy to know she was handling life's challenges well."
