ورد في مسند الإمام أحمد بن حنبل في مجلد ٣٥، صفحة ٤٥٦ و كذلك في صفحة ٥١٢ طبقاً للنسخة الموجودة في المكتبة الشاملة أنه قال رسول الله:
"إنّی تارک فیکم خلیفتین: کتاب الله حبل ممدود ما بین السماء و الارض، أو ما بین السماء الی الارض، و عترتی اهل بیتی، و إنّهما لن یتفرّقا حتی یردا علیّ الحوض"
